How the procedures differ

Meniscus repair aims to preserve the meniscus, while partial meniscectomy removes unstable damaged tissue when repair is unsuitable.

Both procedures address a torn meniscus, but they solve the problem in different ways. Repair uses stitches or another fixation method to help the meniscus heal in place. Partial meniscectomy trims the loose or irreparably damaged portion while keeping the remaining tissue. Examination, imaging, tear location and knee symptoms guide the decision.

When meniscus repair may be considered

Repair may be considered when the tear pattern, tissue quality and location give it a reasonable chance to heal. It is also attractive when preserving meniscal tissue matters for long-term knee load distribution. A surgeon may discuss protection with a brace, crutches or activity limits during early healing, depending on the repair.

When partial meniscectomy may be considered

Partial meniscectomy may be considered when a fragment is loose, frayed or positioned where it repeatedly catches, and the remaining tissue cannot be reliably repaired. Trimming can address mechanical irritation while retaining the healthy part of the meniscus. It does not restore a meniscus that has been removed.

Risks and practical trade-offs

Repair can fail to heal, and the protected rehabilitation period may be longer. Partial meniscectomy can leave less meniscal tissue, which may alter how loads move through the knee. Both operations can involve pain, swelling, stiffness, infection, blood clots or ongoing symptoms, although individual risk varies. New calf swelling, chest pain or breathing difficulty after surgery needs urgent medical attention.

When neither option is the first step

Surgery may not be the immediate answer when symptoms are mild, the knee is stable, or pain is not clearly coming from the meniscus. Physiotherapy, activity modification and a clinician-guided review may be used first. Persistent locking, inability to straighten the knee, major swelling after injury or worsening function warrants timely assessment rather than self-directed exercise.

How a clinician makes the recommendation

The discussion usually considers the tear’s shape and zone, tissue quality, age and activity goals, alignment, ligament stability, previous treatment and the symptoms that matter most to you. Ask whether the tissue is repairable, what restrictions apply, how rehabilitation will progress and what the plan is if symptoms continue. A recommendation should connect the scan and examination to your actual knee function.

Questions people ask

Is meniscus repair better than partial meniscectomy?

Neither is universally better. Repair is favored when the tear and tissue are suitable for healing; trimming may be considered when damaged tissue is not repairable.

Why can recovery differ between the two procedures?

A repair needs protection while the meniscus heals, whereas trimming focuses sooner on restoring movement, strength and daily function.
