Recognising the key sensation
Dizziness is a sensation of imbalance or near-fainting, whereas palpitations are an awareness of the heartbeat.
People use dizziness for different feelings, including spinning, swaying, light-headedness, and a sense of possible fainting. Palpitations may feel like pounding, racing, fluttering, a pause, or skipped beats in the chest, throat, or neck. Both symptoms can be brief or longer-lasting, and noticing the order in which they occur can be useful.
Use dizziness when steadiness or faintness leads
Dizziness is the clearer starting point when you are mainly unsteady, feel the environment moving, or need to sit down because you may faint. Describe whether changing position, turning your head, heat, poor intake, illness, or medication timing affects the feeling. Include any nausea, hearing changes, blurred vision, or weakness rather than assuming they are part of one symptom.
Protect yourself from a fall by sitting or lying down and getting up gradually. Avoid driving or hazardous tasks until the sensation has passed and you feel steady.
Use palpitations when the heartbeat is most noticeable
Palpitations are the better description when you can feel your heart racing, pounding, fluttering, or missing beats. Make a note of whether the rhythm feels regular or irregular, whether it starts and stops abruptly, and whether it follows exertion, stress, caffeine, alcohol, fever, or a new medicine. Symptoms occurring during an episode, including chest discomfort or dizziness, matter to the assessment.
A clinician may ask you to record the time of episodes and, when possible, check your pulse without delaying urgent care for severe symptoms.
Warning signs that should not wait
Seek urgent medical help for palpitations with chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, severe dizziness, or a feeling that you may collapse. Urgent assessment is also needed for new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, a seizure, major visual change, or a sudden severe headache.
If symptoms are severe or you feel unsafe, call emergency services rather than travelling alone. Sit or lie down while waiting if you feel faint, unless this worsens breathing.
Other terms that may be more accurate
Brief loss of consciousness is fainting, not simply dizziness. A spinning feeling specifically may be vertigo. Breathlessness, chest pain, panic, shaking, or fatigue should each be named separately because they can change the urgency and the questions a clinician asks. A pulse you notice after exercise can be normal body awareness, but persistent or troubling episodes still merit discussion.
Use plain words if you are unsure: say what you felt in your body, what you were doing, and what made you stop. Precise labels can come later.
How a clinician approaches the choice
A clinician will consider the pattern of episodes, medical history, medicines and supplements, stimulant use, hydration, and associated symptoms. Examination may include pulse, blood pressure, heart and lung assessment, and a neurological check. Depending on the history, an electrocardiogram, blood tests, or rhythm monitoring may be considered to look for a cause and guide next steps.
Questions people ask
Can palpitations cause dizziness?
They can occur together. If dizziness accompanies a noticeable heartbeat change, record the details and seek urgent care for warning signs such as fainting, chest pain, or shortness of breath.
What should I do during a palpitation episode?
Stop and sit somewhere safe, note when it started and any other symptoms, and seek urgent help if you have chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, or severe dizziness.
