What should you know about zip stitches?

A clinician places the wound edges in alignment, applies adhesive anchors to the nearby dry skin, then tightens the joining strips across the cut. The aim is to support a clean, shallow wound while it starts to seal. The device sits on the surface, unlike stitches placed through skin or staples. It may be chosen where the cut has straight edges and can be held closed without strong tension.

Zip stitches are not a substitute for assessment of a deep, dirty, bitten, gaping, or bleeding wound. The need for a closure method depends on the wound’s location, depth, contamination and the condition of the surrounding skin.

Follow the clinician’s instructions about washing, bathing and coverings. Keep the device clean and avoid rubbing, picking at the adhesive, or stretching the skin around the wound. Do not trim or remove the strips early unless you were specifically told to do so. If an edge lifts, protect it from friction and contact the treating service for advice rather than trying to retighten it yourself.

Check whether your tetanus protection needs review after an injury, particularly when the wound was contaminated. Tell the clinician about adhesive allergy, fragile skin, medicines that affect bleeding, or reduced sensation near the injury.

Seek urgent assessment if bleeding will not stop with firm pressure, the wound opens, numbness or trouble moving the area develops, or the injury was caused by an animal bite, a dirty object or a high-force impact. Arrange prompt review for spreading redness, increasing warmth, swelling, pus, fever, worsening pain or red streaks from the wound. These signs need examination because they can indicate infection or a problem with healing.

Ask when the device should be removed or allowed to fall away, what activities could pull the wound apart, and which changes should prompt a same-day review. If you have a medical condition that affects healing, ask whether you need an earlier wound check.
