What surgical sutures do

Surgical sutures are sterile threads used to bring wound edges together so the tissue can heal with support.

They may be placed through the skin, beneath the skin, or in deeper tissue during an operation or after an injury. The thread is tied or secured so the edges remain aligned while early healing takes place.

How clinicians choose a suture

Sutures vary in material, thickness, texture, and the time they provide support. A clinician selects them according to the body tissue, tension across the wound, the need for skin-edge alignment, and whether the stitch should dissolve or later be removed.

Where stitches may be used

Sutures can close a cut after careful cleaning, secure skin after a planned procedure, or support tissue below the surface. A wound on a moving area may need particular protection because stretching can pull on the closure.

Other closure methods

Depending on the wound, a clinician may use adhesive strips, skin glue, staples, a dressing alone, or leave the wound open for a period of care. Contamination, wound depth, location, and the shape of the edges all affect whether sutures are appropriate.

Caring for a stitched wound

Follow the washing, dressing, and activity instructions supplied after the procedure. Do not pull at loose thread ends or try to remove stitches yourself. Keep follow-up appointments because removable sutures need assessment and removal at a time chosen for the wound location and healing progress.

Problems that need medical advice

Contact a clinician if a wound opens, bleeding returns, stitches come out early, or pain becomes worse instead of settling. Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, discharge, fever, or red streaking can signal a problem that needs prompt assessment. Seek urgent help for numbness, loss of movement, or bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure.

Questions people ask

Do all stitches need to be removed?

No. Some sutures are designed to break down in the body, while others are removed by a clinician. Your treatment team can tell you which type was used.

What if a stitch feels tight?

A mild pulling feeling can occur as a wound heals, especially near a joint or moving skin. Avoid stretching the area and seek advice if tightness is worsening, the wound separates, or circulation seems affected.
