What should you know about Zimmer pedicle screws?

A pedicle is a strong bridge of bone at the back of a vertebra. During stabilisation surgery, screws are positioned through the pedicles and linked with rods. This framework can help maintain alignment while a fusion develops between selected vertebrae. Zimmer identifies the device maker, while the number and location of screws depend on your spine and surgical aim.

Pedicle screws may be part of scoliosis surgery or spinal fusion. They do not themselves remove pressure from a nerve, and they are not a diagnosis of the back or neck problem being treated.

Keep early activity within the limits given by your spine team. Short, frequent walks are often introduced gradually, while bending, lifting, and twisting may be restricted for a period. Take medicines as prescribed and protect the incision from soaking until it has healed. Physiotherapy may focus on posture, walking mechanics, breathing, and safe abdominal or back activation.

Bring a complete medicine list to follow-up. Ask when work, driving, bathing, and lifting can restart, because these milestones vary with the operation and your healing.

Call your surgical team for a wound that becomes red, hot, increasingly painful, or starts draining, or for fever or pain that is getting worse. Seek urgent care for new leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the inner thighs, or sudden difficulty walking. Chest pain or difficult breathing also needs emergency assessment.
