Yellow, Slightly Cloudy Urine

Urine normally ranges from pale to deeper yellow as the amount of fluid in the body changes. When urine is concentrated, it can look darker yellow. A faint cloudiness may come from crystals, mucus, vaginal discharge, semen, or a sample that has stood for a while. Cloudiness alone cannot diagnose a urinary infection.

An infection of the bladder or kidneys can cause cloudy urine, often alongside burning when passing urine, needing to pass urine more often or urgently, lower tummy discomfort, a strong smell, fever, or pain in the side or back. These associated symptoms guide how urgently you should be assessed.

If you have no warning symptoms, drink water regularly and observe a fresh urine sample rather than one that has been sitting. Contact a clinician if the cloudiness continues, recurs, or comes with urinary symptoms. Tell them about pregnancy, a urinary catheter, kidney problems, recent procedures, or medicines, as these details can affect the assessment. Do not take leftover antibiotics.

Seek urgent assessment for fever, chills, pain in the side or back below the ribs, vomiting, feeling very unwell, visible blood in urine, or inability to pass urine. These symptoms can occur when a urinary problem needs prompt treatment. Children, pregnant people, and people with weakened immune systems should seek advice promptly for possible urinary infection symptoms.

Ask whether a urine test is needed, whether the symptoms fit a lower urinary infection or possible kidney involvement, and when results will be available. Ask what fluid intake is appropriate for you, whether any medicines could alter urine appearance, and which changes mean you should get urgent care.
