What should you know about yellow nail syndrome bronchiectasis?

Yellow nail syndrome is an uncommon pattern in which nails become yellow, thickened, curved, or slower to grow. Some people also develop swelling in a limb or breathing problems. Bronchiectasis is a long-term widening of airways that can make mucus harder to clear.

A cough and coughing up phlegm are common presentations of bronchiectasis. The combination of nail changes and chest symptoms does not confirm the cause on its own, because nail colour can change for other reasons and chest symptoms have many possible explanations.

Arrange a non-urgent appointment if nail changes persist or are accompanied by recurring chest symptoms. Take photographs of the nails over time and write down cough, phlegm, breathlessness, wheeze, fever, swelling, and any infections you have had. This can help show the pattern clearly.

Assessment may include listening to the chest and considering imaging or breathing tests. A Chest X-Ray can help review the lungs, while Spirometry measures how air moves during breathing. Keep taking prescribed respiratory medicines as directed unless a clinician tells you to change them.

Get urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, coughing up more than a small streak of blood, or rapid deterioration. Contact a clinician promptly for fever with worsening cough or phlegm, because a chest infection may need assessment.

New one-sided leg swelling, sudden breathlessness, or sudden chest pain also needs urgent assessment. These symptoms can have causes unrelated to the nails and should not be watched at home.
