What should you know about yellow dandruff on scalp?

Short answer
Yellow dandruff on the scalp often reflects oily scaling from dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis, but persistent changes need assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What yellow flakes can mean
Dandruff produces flakes as scalp skin sheds more noticeably. When the scale looks yellow or greasy, the scalp may also be inflamed, as in seborrhoeic dermatitis. Itching, redness and flakes around the hairline, eyebrows or ears can occur together. Thick crust, soreness, broken skin, hair loss or pus suggests a different or more active problem and should not be self-diagnosed from colour alone.
Yellow material can sometimes be product residue or dried fluid from scratching. Look at whether the scalp is oily, tender, weeping or developing defined patches. More detail is available in Dandruff, Seborrheic Dermatitis, Itchy Scalp and Flaky Scalp.
What you can do
Wash the scalp regularly with a gentle cleanser and avoid picking or scraping the scale. A clinician or pharmacist may suggest a medicated shampoo suited to the pattern; use it on the scalp for the stated contact time rather than only on the hair. Medicated Shampoo Treatment and Topical Antifungal Treatment describe options that may be considered.
Stop any newly introduced hair dye, oil, fragrance or styling product if the change began after using it. Rinse thoroughly and keep combs, hats and pillowcases clean. If symptoms continue despite appropriate washing, arrange a dermatology review so infection, psoriasis or contact irritation can be considered.
When to seek care
Seek prompt medical advice for spreading redness, marked swelling, warmth, significant pain, pus, fever, tender swollen glands or patchy hair loss. Arrange a routine appointment when yellow scale keeps returning, affects the face or ears, disturbs sleep, or does not settle with a suitable shampoo. A baby, older adult or person with reduced immunity should be assessed sooner if the scalp is crusted or weeping.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the appearance fits dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis, contact irritation or infection; which product is appropriate for your scalp; how long to try it; and what changes should trigger an earlier review.

Questions people ask
Does yellow dandruff always mean an infection?
No. Oily dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis can produce yellow-looking scale, while colour alone cannot identify the cause.
Can I remove the flakes by scratching?
Scratching can injure the scalp and cause bleeding or infection, so soften and wash the scale instead.
