What should you know about yellow cough?

Mucus can look yellow when inflammatory cells and proteins are present in airway secretions. This may happen with a common cold, acute bronchitis, sinus drainage, or other irritation. Yellow mucus does not by itself show that antibiotics are needed. The duration of the cough, breathing symptoms, fever, chest discomfort, exposure history, and examination findings are more useful for deciding what care is appropriate.

Acute bronchitis often presents with a cough that may bring up mucus. Asthma can present with cough, wheeze, chest tightness, or shortness of breath, while allergic rhinitis may contribute to cough through postnasal drip. A cough can also be linked to acid reflux, especially when it is worse after meals or when lying down. These patterns overlap and require individual assessment.

Rest, drink fluids, and avoid smoke, vaping, incense, and other airway irritants. Warm drinks may soothe throat discomfort. Check with a pharmacist before using cough remedies, particularly for children, pregnancy, long-term conditions, or regular medicines. Take prescribed inhalers or other respiratory treatment as directed rather than changing the dose on your own.

Record when the cough began, whether it is improving, the color and amount of mucus, temperature, breathlessness, wheeze, chest pain, and any triggers. Arrange a medical review if the cough is not improving, repeatedly returns, disrupts sleep, or affects daily activity.

Seek urgent medical assessment for difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, severe chest pain, confusion, coughing up blood, fainting, or a rapidly worsening illness. Children, older adults, and people with significant heart, lung, or immune conditions should be assessed promptly when a cough is accompanied by breathing changes or poor fluid intake. Contact emergency services if breathing is severely affected.

Ask what is most likely irritating your airways, whether you need an examination or tests, how long to monitor symptoms, and whether your inhaler technique or reflux treatment should be reviewed. Mention smoking or vaping exposure, recent travel, sick contacts, and any previous lung condition.
