What should you know about yellow cloudy urine with odor?

Urine becomes darker yellow when it is more concentrated, which can happen when you have not taken in enough fluid or have lost fluid through heat, vomiting, diarrhoea, or exercise. Cloudiness may come from crystals, mucus, cells, or contamination from vaginal discharge. Strong odor can be more noticeable in concentrated urine and after some foods, drinks, vitamins, or medicines.

A urinary tract infection can present with burning when passing urine, a frequent or urgent need to urinate, lower abdominal discomfort, cloudy urine, or a new odor. Kidney infection can include urinary symptoms together with fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or vomiting. These conditions often present with urine changes, but urine appearance alone cannot diagnose either condition.

Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to limit them. Note when the change started and whether it improves after you drink, as well as pain, fever, discharge, blood, urinary frequency, or recent changes in medicines and supplements. Avoid using leftover antibiotics or someone else's treatment, because a urine test may be needed to guide care.

Arrange a routine appointment if the change persists, keeps returning, or comes with discomfort. A clinician may ask for a urine sample and review your symptoms, medicines, and medical history.

Seek urgent medical care for fever with side or back pain, vomiting, confusion, severe lower abdominal pain, inability to pass urine, or visible blood in urine. Get prompt advice if you are pregnant, have a weakened immune system, have kidney disease, or develop new urinary symptoms with fever. These situations need assessment rather than waiting to see whether urine color settles.

Ask whether you need a urine test, what symptoms suggest infection or dehydration, whether your medicines could alter urine, and what warning signs should lead you to seek care sooner. Mention any previous urinary infections or kidney problems.
