Yellow breast milk and mastitis: what to know

Short answer
Yellow breast milk is often normal, while mastitis causes breast inflammation and needs attention when pain, swelling or illness develops.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Milk colour
- Yellow or creamy shades can be normal.
- Mastitis clues
- Tenderness, warmth, swelling and feeling unwell.
- Feeding
- Keep milk removal gentle and comfortable.
What yellow milk and mastitis can mean
Early milk, sometimes called colostrum, can look yellow and is rich in nutrients. Mature milk can also appear cream-coloured or vary in shade between feeds. Colour alone does not diagnose mastitis. Mastitis is inflammation in breast tissue, commonly noticed as a tender, warm, swollen or firm area. Nipple damage, milk stasis, pressure on the breast or an infection may contribute. Painful breastfeeding can occur with mastitis, but feeding discomfort also has other causes.
What you can do today
Continue breastfeeding or expressing in a way that feels manageable; abrupt stopping can make breast fullness worse. Check that your baby’s latch is comfortable, vary feeding positions and avoid deep massage or forceful pumping. Rest, drink to thirst and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for swelling. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on pain relief that fits breastfeeding. A lactation consultation can help identify latch, positioning or milk-removal problems.
When to seek medical care
Contact a clinician promptly if you have fever, chills, marked tiredness, rapidly worsening redness, severe pain, pus-like drainage or a lump that remains after feeding. Seek urgent help if you feel faint, confused or seriously unwell. Arrange review when symptoms are not improving, because a collection of infected fluid may need assessment. Yellow milk without breast symptoms usually does not require emergency care, but persistent concerns deserve an examination.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit inflammatory or infective mastitis, whether a persistent lump needs imaging, which pain medicines are compatible with breastfeeding, and how to protect milk supply while the breast settles.
