What breast pain can feel like

Breast pain can reflect hormonal sensitivity, breast inflammation, blocked milk flow, or changes in breast tissue. Pain may feel aching, heavy, tender, burning, tight, or sharp. It can affect one area, one breast, both breasts, or the chest wall beneath the breast. Some people notice fullness or lumpiness that changes during the menstrual cycle; others feel pain around the nipple or while feeding. Describe the location, timing, severity, and whether movement, touch, or breastfeeding changes it.

Breast pain and a breast lump can occur together without the lump being cancer. A new lump, skin change, or nipple discharge should still be assessed.

When to seek urgent help

Arrange prompt care for a hot, red, swollen breast with fever or feeling unwell, particularly while breastfeeding. Seek urgent assessment for rapidly worsening pain, severe swelling, or a painful area that may contain pus. A new hard lump, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or a persistent one-sided change needs clinical review even when pain is mild.

Possible causes

The causes below are listed alphabetically, not by likelihood. Blocked Milk Duct can cause a tender area when milk does not drain well. Fibrocystic Breast Changes can produce lumpiness and tenderness that varies with the cycle. Mastitis can present with breast pain, warmth, redness, and flu-like symptoms. Premenstrual Syndrome can include breast tenderness from hormone changes. Pain can also arise from an ill-fitting bra, chest-wall muscles, injury, medicines, or irritation around the nipple.

How breast pain is assessed

A clinician asks about your menstrual cycle, pregnancy or breastfeeding, medicines, injury, and family history. They examine both breasts, the nipples, and nearby lymph nodes, and may also check the chest wall. Imaging such as an ultrasound or mammogram is selected according to your age, examination findings, and whether a lump or other change is present. Tests are not always needed for short-lived cyclical tenderness.

Treatment follows the cause

A supportive bra, warm or cool compresses, and suitable pain relief may ease uncomplicated tenderness. A blocked milk duct is managed with feeding or expressing support and attention to comfort; mastitis may need prescribed treatment. Fibrocystic symptoms can be monitored with cycle tracking. If an abscess develops, Breast Abscess Drainage may be needed so infected fluid can leave the breast. Do not squeeze a lump or repeatedly press a painful area.

Ways to reduce breast discomfort

Choose a supportive, well-fitting bra for exercise and daily activities, check that feeding positions do not put pressure on one area, and avoid sudden repeated changes in breast stimulation when possible. Track symptoms against your cycle. Protect the skin from friction and seek advice when a new medicine seems to coincide with pain.

Changes to mention with pain

Mention a lump, redness, warmth, swelling, nipple discharge, nipple or skin changes, fever, or pain that stays in one spot. Chest pain with breathlessness, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw is an emergency and may not be coming from the breast.

What happens next

Many episodes improve after the trigger is addressed, but pain that persists, recurs in one area, or comes with a physical change should be examined. A symptom diary can help distinguish cycle-related tenderness from a new pattern and makes the appointment more useful.

Questions people ask

Does breast pain mean breast cancer?

Breast pain has many possible causes and does not by itself establish cancer. A persistent lump, skin change, nipple change, or unusual discharge should be assessed.

What can help cyclical breast tenderness?

A supportive bra, compresses, appropriate pain relief, and recording when symptoms occur can help; persistent or changing symptoms need a clinical examination.
