Yeast infection under stomach fold: what to know

The rash can be bright red or darker than the surrounding skin, with burning, tenderness, a moist surface, fine cracks or small spots near its border. Sweat and skin rubbing can keep the area irritated. A fold rash may also be caused by eczema, a reaction to soap or fabric, or bacterial infection, so these signs do not identify yeast by themselves. A rash under the stomach is different from vaginal thrush. Vaginal discharge, vaginal itching and vulval pain need consideration as separate symptoms.

Use lukewarm water and a mild, unscented cleanser, then dry the fold with gentle pats. Change underwear and clothing when damp, and choose breathable materials that do not rub. Avoid tight waistbands, scratching, perfume and harsh antiseptics. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antifungal cream fits the appearance and location of the rash. Use only as directed, especially if the skin is broken or very tender.

Arrange prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe swelling, pus, a foul odour, open sores or worsening pain. Book an assessment if it has not started improving with appropriate care, keeps recurring, or makes movement difficult. Tell the clinician about diabetes, pregnancy, immune problems and any products already applied.
