Yeast infection under the arm

Under-arm yeast irritation often affects skin exposed to sweat and repeated movement. The area may look red or darker than nearby skin, feel itchy or burning, and develop moisture, scaling, cracks, or small spots near the border. A reaction to deodorant, shaving, eczema, or bacterial infection can cause a similar pattern.

The rash does not explain genital symptoms by itself. If you also have vaginal itching, unusual discharge, or vulval pain, mention each symptom because it may need a separate diagnosis.

Wash gently, pat dry, and wear loose clothing that allows air to circulate. Avoid deodorant, perfume, scrubbing, and shaving over irritated skin. Replace damp clothing and use a separate clean towel. Do not scratch, since broken skin is easier to irritate and infect.

A pharmacist or clinician can help select a topical antifungal if yeast is likely. Follow the directions and ask before using a steroid, antiseptic, or a product made for vaginal thrush on the under-arm skin.

Seek an assessment if the rash is not improving, keeps coming back, spreads, or becomes cracked, wet, smelly, or painful. Get prompt medical help for fever, rapidly worsening redness, severe swelling, pus, or a tender lump. A clinician can look for causes other than yeast when treatment does not fit the pattern.

Ask whether this is likely to be yeast, irritation, allergy, or another infection; which treatment suits the site; and how to prevent recurrence. Explain when it started, whether deodorant or shaving preceded it, and whether the rash is on one side or both.
