Yeast infection red rash: what to know

Thrush can inflame the vulval skin, causing redness, soreness, itching, burning, or small cracks. Some people also notice thick, pale discharge, while others mainly feel external irritation. Fragranced washes, pads, tight clothing, moisture, and friction can cause or worsen a rash without thrush being present. A clinician may examine the skin and ask about discharge, urinary burning, recent antibiotics, diabetes, pregnancy, or previous episodes.

Keep the area gently clean with lukewarm water and pat it dry. Choose loose, breathable underwear, change out of damp clothing, and avoid scratching, douching, deodorant sprays, and scented products. Pause sexual contact if friction is uncomfortable. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether antifungal treatment is suitable; using the wrong product can prolong irritation or hide another diagnosis.

Arrange an assessment if this is your first episode, symptoms keep returning, treatment does not help, or the rash is spreading or very painful. Seek prompt medical care for fever, pelvic pain, sores or blisters, marked swelling, pus, or difficulty passing urine. Pregnancy, diabetes, a weakened immune system, or recent antibiotic use also makes individual advice worthwhile.
