Yeast infection rash on thighs

A yeast-related fold rash can be red, itchy, moist or tender, sometimes with small spots near the edge. Friction, sweating and tight clothing can worsen it. Similar rashes can come from contact dermatitis, eczema, ringworm or bacterial infection, so the appearance is not enough to identify the cause. Vaginal itching or vaginal discharge alongside the thigh rash may suggest irritation in more than one area, while vulval pain describes discomfort around the external genital skin.

Wash gently and pat the skin dry rather than rubbing. Change out of damp clothing promptly, choose loose breathable underwear, and keep the fold as cool and dry as possible. Avoid fragranced products and scratching, which can break the skin. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether an antifungal treatment is appropriate and how long to use it. Do not apply a steroid cream alone to an undiagnosed rash, because it can mask or worsen some fungal infections.

Seek an assessment if the rash is spreading, cracked, weeping, painful, repeatedly returning, or not improving with suitable care. Prompt advice is needed for fever, rapidly increasing redness or warmth, pus, open sores, severe swelling, or diabetes or reduced immunity. A clinician may examine the skin and test a sample when the diagnosis is uncertain.
