Yeast infection in the diaper area

Yeast can grow where a diaper traps warmth and moisture. The skin may look bright red, shiny, sore, or scaly, with small red spots beyond the main rash. A simple irritant rash often improves when wetness and friction are reduced, while yeast may involve skin creases. Similar redness can result from allergy, eczema, bacterial infection, or another cause.

Change wet or soiled diapers promptly, cleanse with lukewarm water or an unscented product, and pat dry. Allow brief diaper-free time when practical, and avoid talcum powder, fragranced wipes, and scrubbing. For babies, use only a product recommended for their age and skin. For adults, breathable underwear and prompt changes after sweating can reduce moisture. Do not use steroid or combination creams without advice.

Arrange medical advice when the rash affects skin folds, is painful, blistered, cracked, weeping, or fails to improve with careful hygiene. Seek prompt help for fever, pus, rapidly spreading redness, unusual sleepiness, poor feeding, or a baby who seems unwell. Repeated rashes deserve review for irritation, allergy, medication effects, or another skin condition.
