Yeast infection flaky skin: what to know

Irritated skin may shed fine scales and feel itchy, raw or cracked. Yeast is more plausible when the change sits in a moist fold and has a clear edge, but psoriasis, eczema, friction and contact dermatitis can also peel. Vaginal thrush may cause vulval irritation rather than a separate patch of flaky skin.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then dry by patting rather than rubbing. Choose loose, breathable clothing and change out of damp garments. Avoid scratching, scrubbing, scented powders and shared towels. If prescribed antifungal treatment, use it exactly as directed; do not add steroid cream without advice.

See a clinician if scaling persists, returns often, becomes painful or develops cracks, blisters, pus or marked redness. Get urgent help if fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe swelling or severe pain accompanies the skin change.

Ask what pattern they see, whether another condition is more likely, how long treatment should continue, and which moisturisers or cleansers are suitable for the affected area.
