Yeast infection on the body: what to know

Skin-fold yeast irritation may affect the groin, under the breasts, the armpits, between the buttocks or other areas that stay warm and damp. It can look red, feel raw or itchy, and sometimes have a moist surface or small spots around the edge. Eczema, friction, bacterial infection and product reactions may cause similar symptoms.

Clean gently and dry each fold thoroughly, including after bathing or sweating. Loose clothing and breathable fabrics can reduce trapped moisture. Avoid perfumed products, vigorous rubbing, scratching and home remedies that sting. Keep towels and clothing personal, and wash them regularly.

Ask a pharmacist or clinician whether an antifungal is suitable for the rash, especially if it is extensive, recurrent, on broken skin or near the eyes. Arrange prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, increasing pain, fever or cracked skin. Seek urgent help if the rash involves the eyes, causes facial swelling, breathing difficulty or severe illness. A clinician should review a rash that keeps returning, fails to improve, or appears in several body areas.

Ask whether the pattern fits yeast or another skin condition, whether a swab or skin examination is needed, and how to keep the affected folds dry. Mention diabetes, pregnancy, recent antibiotics, immune problems, allergies and new products. Ask when to stop treatment and what recurrence should prompt a review.
