Yeast infection and black spots: what to know

Yeast more often causes itching, burning, soreness and red or inflamed skin. Darkening can follow irritation or healing, while a spot may also be a mole, blocked pore, bruise, scab or another skin change. A photograph or description cannot reliably distinguish these possibilities.

Do not pick, scratch, bleach or scrub the spot, and avoid applying antifungal cream directly to an unexplained dark mark unless advised. Use gentle, unscented cleansing and keep the area dry. Arrange a clinician or dermatology review for a new, persistent or changing spot, particularly when it is on genital skin.

If surrounding skin is clearly itchy and red, a pharmacist may discuss whether antifungal treatment is appropriate, but the dark spot still needs separate attention. Seek prompt assessment if a spot bleeds without clear injury, develops a persistent crust, becomes painful, changes noticeably, or sits within an ulcer or spreading rash. Urgent care is appropriate for severe swelling, rapidly worsening pain, fever or feeling seriously unwell. Do not delay review simply because itching improves.

Ask what the spot could represent, whether it needs a skin examination or follow-up photograph, and whether surrounding irritation is a separate issue.
