Yeast infection between the thigh and groin

Short answer
A yeast infection between the thigh and groin may cause a moist, itchy rash, yet irritation and other infections can appear much the same.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the area
The crease where the thigh meets the groin is exposed to rubbing, sweat and limited airflow. Yeast may cause redness, itching, burning, tenderness or a moist surface, with smaller spots near the edge. However, friction rash, eczema, bacterial infection and a reaction to soap or laundry products can share these features.
Symptoms on the outer groin fold are not the same as symptoms inside the vagina. If you also have discharge, read [Vaginal Discharge](/symptoms/vaginal-discharge/); itching or soreness around the vulva is covered by [Vaginal Itching](/symptoms/vaginal-itching/) and [Vulval Pain](/symptoms/vulval-pain/).
Steps that may help
Rinse gently with lukewarm water or a mild, non-perfumed cleanser, then dry the crease carefully. Wear loose clothing and breathable underwear, and change after sweating. Do not scratch, scrub, or use fragranced sprays, powders or antiseptics on irritated skin. Keeping the fold dry reduces ongoing friction and moisture.
Ask a pharmacist or clinician whether an antifungal treatment fits the symptoms and exact location. Follow the label or prescription directions, and stop self-treatment advice from becoming a substitute for an examination if the rash persists. See [Antifungal Treatment for Thrush](/treatments/medical-gynaecology/antifungal-treatment-for-thrush/) for related treatment information.
Warning signs
Get prompt medical advice if redness spreads, the area becomes hot or swollen, pain increases, pus develops, or the skin cracks deeply. Fever, blisters, ulcers, or feeling significantly unwell also need assessment. Arrange a review for a rash that returns frequently or does not settle after suitable care, since the cause may not be yeast.
What to ask
Ask whether the rash is in the skin fold, on the vulva, or both; whether an examination or swab is useful; and which medicine is appropriate for that site. Mention pregnancy, diabetes, recent antibiotics, allergies and new personal-care products. Ask how to prevent moisture and friction from reopening the rash.

Questions people ask
Can friction cause the same rash?
Yes. Rubbing and sweat can inflame the fold and resemble yeast, especially after activity.
When should a pharmacist see it?
Ask for help when the diagnosis is unclear, the rash is recurrent, or symptoms are spreading or painful.
