What the skin change may mean

Yeast can multiply in warm, damp skin folds and beneath or beside an appliance. The area may look bright red, feel itchy or burning, and develop small spots at the edge of the main rash. Stool, urine, adhesive products and repeated cleaning can also inflame the skin. The appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Keep the stoma itself in view: a new rash on the surrounding skin is different from a change in the stoma, output or appliance seal. Gently cleanse the surrounding skin with water or the product recommended for your stoma, then pat it fully dry. Check whether leakage, sweating or a poorly fitting opening is keeping the skin wet. Avoid scrubbing, perfumed products and unapproved creams beneath the adhesive, since they can worsen irritation or stop the pouch from sticking.

Contact your stoma nurse, pharmacist or clinician before applying an antifungal product, especially if the rash is spreading or recurring.
