Year-end fatigue: causes and next steps

Short answer
Year-end fatigue can reflect accumulated stress, disrupted sleep, changed routines or an underlying health issue that needs attention.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Reason to review
- Fatigue that continues despite rest or limits daily life.
Why tiredness can build up
Busy deadlines, travel, social commitments and fewer recovery periods can gradually reduce sleep and strain concentration. Alcohol, irregular meals, low fluid intake and less activity may compound the problem. Burnout can bring emotional exhaustion and detachment as well as tiredness. Fatigue is also a presentation of many health conditions, including anaemia, dehydration, infection and long-term kidney disease, so a continuing loss of energy should not automatically be put down to a busy season.
Reset the basics
For several days, aim for a consistent waking time, regular meals and enough fluid across the day. Break demanding tasks into smaller blocks and schedule a genuine pause before moving to the next one. Gentle movement outdoors can support sleep timing and mood if you feel well enough. Keep a short diary of sleep, food, alcohol, stress and energy. It can reveal whether the fatigue improves as routine settles or whether it remains unchanged despite rest.
When to arrange medical review
See a clinician if fatigue persists, keeps worsening, affects work or home life, or comes with low mood that you cannot shift. Prompt care is important for chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, a racing heartbeat, black stools, severe weakness or signs of dehydration. Arrange assessment after a recent infection if exhaustion is prolonged, and mention snoring, medication changes, heavy periods, dietary restrictions or alcohol use because each can guide the evaluation.
How to prepare for an appointment
Describe when the fatigue began, whether rest helps and any changes in sleep, weight, mood, appetite, bowel habits or exercise tolerance. Ask what examination or tests may clarify the cause, and whether your work pattern, medication or a long-term condition could be contributing.
