Xanax and hyperthyroidism: what to know

Hyperthyroidism can cause feeling anxious, palpitations, difficulty sleeping, heat intolerance, excessive sweating, diarrhoea, tremor, and weight change. Because these symptoms may resemble anxiety, it is important to consider whether thyroid hormone excess is contributing. Xanax is a brand name for alprazolam, a medicine that can cause drowsiness, slowed reactions, and dependence. It does not lower thyroid hormone levels or address the cause of an overactive thyroid. Take Xanax only as prescribed and do not adjust the dose based on palpitations or sleep problems without speaking to the prescriber. Avoid driving or hazardous work if it makes you sleepy or affects coordination. Seek urgent medical care for chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, severe agitation, or new confusion. Emergency help is also needed for extreme sleepiness, slowed breathing, or difficulty waking after Xanax or another sedating medicine. Contact your clinician promptly if anxiety, sweating, diarrhoea, tremor, or palpitations are escalating, because these may need reassessment of your thyroid condition.

Ask whether your current symptoms could be related to thyroid hormone levels, what treatment is aimed at controlling the overactive thyroid, and whether Xanax is suitable with your other medicines.
