What should you know about womb pain during ovulation?

Ovulation pain, also called mittelschmerz, may feel like a cramp, ache, or brief sharp pain on one side of the lower abdomen. It can occur when an ovary releases an egg and may switch sides between cycles. A predictable pattern around the middle of the cycle can support this explanation, but pain location alone cannot confirm its cause.

Other conditions can produce similar pain. Endometriosis and Ovarian Cysts may cause pelvic discomfort, while pregnancy-related problems, infection, bowel conditions, or urinary problems can also need consideration.

Record when the pain starts, which side hurts, how long it lasts, bleeding or discharge, bowel or urinary symptoms, and whether it follows a cycle pattern. Rest, gentle heat, and an appropriate over-the-counter pain medicine may help if you can take it safely. A clinician can discuss hormonal contraception when recurring ovulation pain disrupts daily life.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding, fever, repeated vomiting, or a rigid or very tender abdomen.
