What should you know about WLE for melanoma?

WLE means wide local excision. A surgeon removes the known melanoma together with nearby skin so the laboratory can assess the specimen and the edges. The wound may be closed directly or need a graft or another repair, depending on its size and position.

The pathology report helps the team understand features such as depth and whether the edges are clear. Some people are offered a Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy to gather more staging information. WLE does not by itself describe whether melanoma has spread; that question is answered through the complete clinical and pathology assessment.

Ask how to prepare, which medicines or supplements need discussion, and how the wound will be dressed. After surgery, follow instructions for keeping the area clean, limiting strain, and attending wound checks. Protect the scar from strong sun while it heals and report changes rather than applying unapproved products.

Depending on the findings, care may include Skin Cancer Surgery, Follow-Up After Cancer Treatment, or additional treatment such as Immunotherapy. Your team will explain why a recommendation applies to your pathology and stage.

Contact the surgical team for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, wound separation, fever, or pain that is worsening rather than settling. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure, severe allergic symptoms, new weakness, confusion, or a sudden severe headache. Keep scheduled skin and lymph-node checks even when the wound looks healed.
