Short answer

A withdrawal headache can develop after abruptly reducing or stopping a regularly used substance or medicine, as the body adapts to the change.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why it may happen

Headaches may occur when the body has become accustomed to caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, some pain medicines, sedatives or another regularly used substance. They can also arise alongside withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, sweating, anxiety, tremor, poor sleep or irritability, depending on what was changed. The timing and symptoms matter because headaches also have many unrelated causes. Dehydration, heat exposure, respiratory infections and sinus symptoms can each be associated with headache, so a withdrawal explanation should not be assumed without considering the full picture.

A safer response

Make a note of what you stopped or reduced, when the change happened, how often it had been used, and any other symptoms. Drink fluids if you can keep them down, rest in a quiet environment, eat regular light meals, and avoid driving if you feel dizzy or unwell. Do not restart or increase a medicine, alcohol or another substance simply to suppress symptoms without clinical advice. Stopping some prescribed medicines or heavily used substances suddenly can be unsafe; a clinician can advise whether a supervised reduction is needed.

When to seek urgent help

Seek urgent medical care for a sudden severe headache, a headache after a head injury, confusion, fainting, seizure, weakness, numbness, difficulty speaking, a stiff neck, new vision loss, repeated vomiting, or fever with a rapidly worsening headache. Get prompt medical advice if withdrawal symptoms are escalating, you cannot keep fluids down, you have chest pain or severe agitation, or the headache persists despite stopping the suspected trigger. If alcohol, sedatives or opioid medicines are involved, obtain medical guidance before attempting withdrawal alone.

Questions to discuss

Ask whether your symptoms fit withdrawal, whether another cause should be checked, and whether a gradual reduction plan is appropriate. Bring a list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, supplements, caffeine intake and substances used, including the last time each was taken.

Questions people ask

Should I stop a prescribed medicine if I think it is causing withdrawal headache?

Do not make abrupt changes without speaking to the prescriber or another qualified clinician, because some medicines need a planned reduction.

Can dehydration cause a headache at the same time?

Yes. Fluid loss can be associated with headache and may complicate how you feel during a change in regular intake.
