Why is tissue expander used in breast reconstruction?

A tissue expander is a temporary device placed beneath the chest skin, sometimes with muscle covering it. It begins partly filled, then is adjusted during follow-up visits so the surrounding tissue can expand over time. This staged approach can help shape the reconstructed breast and prepare the skin for a later implant exchange. The timing and amount of each adjustment depend on healing, tissue flexibility, previous treatment, and the surgical plan.

Reconstruction may be performed after breast removal or at a later stage. Radiation therapy, scars, infection risk, and the condition of the skin can affect whether an expander is suitable. An expander does not treat cancer; it is part of rebuilding breast shape.

Attend expansion and surgical follow-up appointments so the team can assess healing and decide whether another adjustment is appropriate. Follow instructions about wound care, activity, medicines, and support garments. Temporary tightness or pressure can occur after an adjustment; report discomfort that is worsening, severe, or not settling as expected. Keep the team informed about any planned radiation or other cancer treatment because it may affect reconstruction timing.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, wound separation, fever, or a sudden change in the expander's position or appearance. Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, or rapidly worsening illness.
