Why is time-lapse embryo imaging used in ivf?

A camera takes images at intervals during embryo culture. The embryology team can review cell division and developmental changes as a sequence rather than relying only on separate checks. Because the embryo remains in the incubator, the laboratory can observe it without opening the culture environment each time it needs to be viewed.

The recording adds context to assessment but does not provide a certain prediction about implantation or pregnancy. Teams consider the time-lapse pattern alongside embryo appearance, developmental stage, the number of embryos available, and your clinical circumstances.

Ask whether your IVF laboratory offers time-lapse imaging and whether it is routinely used or selected for a particular reason. Find out how the team will apply the observations to embryo culture, transfer, or freezing decisions. Request an explanation of the terms used in your report and ask when updates will be provided.

The images are not a test you need to interpret at home. If the clinic recommends a transfer or freezing plan, ask how the developmental record contributed and what other information was considered.
