Why is a spinal decompression table used in traction therapy?

Short answer

A spinal decompression table is used in traction therapy to support the body and deliver a measured pull that can be adjusted to the person’s spinal region and symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the equipment matters

Traction needs a stable position and a predictable direction of force. A decompression table uses a padded surface, supports, and moving sections to help the clinician apply traction to the cervical or lumbar spine. The pull may be steady or alternate with release periods, depending on the treatment plan. The clinician watches your symptoms and can change the position or intensity. Traction may be considered for selected musculoskeletal or nerve-related symptoms, but the table does not diagnose the cause and is not a substitute for an examination.

Making a session safer

Give a full history of recent falls, fractures, operations, osteoporosis, infection, cancer, pregnancy, and medicines that affect bleeding. During treatment, communicate immediately if you develop sharp pain, spreading tingling, dizziness, nausea, or unusual pressure. Afterward, move slowly and follow the clinician’s advice about exercises and activity. Do not increase traction at home without guidance. A useful review considers changes in function, such as sitting, standing, or walking, as well as pain intensity.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt review if symptoms become progressively worse after treatment, or if new weakness or numbness appears. Seek urgent care for bladder or bowel changes, numbness around the saddle area, sudden severe back pain after an injury, or difficulty moving a limb. These symptoms need a medical assessment rather than another traction session.

Questions for your doctor

Which part of my spine will be treated, and why? What type of traction will you use? What should I feel during a session, and what means the treatment should stop? How will you decide whether to continue, change, or discontinue it?

Questions people ask

Is traction always continuous?

No. The clinician may use a steady pull or cycles of pulling and release based on the plan.

Can I start traction without an assessment?

A clinician should first check the likely cause of symptoms and whether traction is appropriate for you.
