What a spinal decompression table is

A spinal decompression table is a motorised treatment surface that gently changes spinal positioning or traction under clinical supervision. Depending on the design, the table may support the back, pelvis, or neck while a controlled movement creates a pulling or unloading sensation. The clinician chooses the position and settings according to the body region being treated and the person’s symptoms.

The table is equipment, not a diagnosis. It does not show what is causing back or neck pain, and it cannot decide whether traction is appropriate. A clinician may combine its use with an examination, exercise, hands-on care, or advice about movement.

How it is used in a session

You usually lie or sit on the table while the clinician checks your position and explains what you may feel. Straps or supports can help stabilise part of the body. The clinician starts with settings suited to the planned treatment, watches your response, and changes the position or force when needed. Tell them promptly about sharp pain, spreading symptoms, numbness, dizziness, or a feeling that does not settle when the setting is reduced.

Treatment may be one part of a wider plan. The table may be used alongside active rehabilitation so that strength, mobility, lifting habits, and confidence with movement are addressed rather than relying on equipment alone.

What the table cannot tell or do

A decompression table cannot confirm a slipped disc, nerve compression, arthritis, or another cause of pain. It also cannot replace an assessment of strength, sensation, reflexes, walking, or bladder and bowel symptoms when those checks are relevant. A comfortable session does not prove that the underlying problem has been corrected.

Response varies. Some people may feel temporary relief, while others may notice little change or may feel more irritated afterward. The useful question is whether the treatment fits your diagnosis, goals, and overall rehabilitation plan—not whether the device sounds advanced.

Other approaches that may be considered

Depending on the assessment, alternatives may include education, graded exercise, manual therapy, activity modification, or another form of traction. The choice depends on the suspected cause, irritability of symptoms, examination findings, and your goals. A table is not automatically more suitable than simpler care.

What this means for you

Before a session, share relevant medical history, recent injuries, operations, osteoporosis, pregnancy, or symptoms travelling into an arm or leg. Wear clothing that allows comfortable positioning. Afterward, follow the clinician’s advice about normal activity and note how symptoms behave over the next day. A change in pain matters, but so do walking, sleep, work tasks, and ability to move.

Safety and when to seek help

The clinician should screen for reasons traction or spinal positioning may be unsuitable and explain how to stop the session. Seek urgent medical assessment for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, severe or progressive weakness, or major symptoms after a significant injury. These warning signs need medical evaluation rather than another table session.

Questions people ask

Does a spinal decompression table diagnose the cause of back pain?

No. Diagnosis comes from clinical history and examination, with tests used when appropriate; the table only delivers a selected treatment setup.

Should treatment hurt?

Tell the clinician about sharp, spreading, or worsening symptoms. They can reassess the position and decide whether to reduce or stop treatment.
