Why is sclerosant solution used in sclerotherapy?

Short answer

Sclerosant solution is used in sclerotherapy because it irritates a targeted vein lining, encouraging that vein to close while blood is redirected through healthier vessels.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Close selected superficial veins

Walking, compression if prescribed, and review

How the treatment works

A clinician selects visible or ultrasound-guided veins and places the solution inside them. The controlled irritation makes the vessel walls come together; the treated vein then becomes less prominent as the body gradually breaks it down. This approach is commonly used for spider veins and some small varicose veins, but suitability depends on the vein pattern and circulation.

The injected area may sting, bruise, itch, feel tight, or show temporary trapped blood. More than one appointment may be discussed because different veins can respond differently. Sclerotherapy does not correct every underlying vein problem.

What to do around treatment

Share your medical history, medicines, previous clots, pregnancy status, allergies, and any circulation symptoms. Afterward, walk as instructed and wear compression if prescribed. Avoid rubbing the injection sites and follow advice about strenuous exercise, heat, and sun exposure. Keep scheduled reviews so the clinician can check the treated veins and circulation.

When to seek care

Get prompt medical advice for increasing redness, warmth, tenderness, drainage, or swelling along a vein. Seek urgent help for sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing blood, or one-sided leg swelling and pain. A severe headache, weakness, or visual change after treatment also needs immediate assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which veins are being treated, whether imaging is needed, what solution is planned, how compression should be used, and which symptoms are expected. Ask how existing circulation problems could change the treatment plan.

Questions people ask

Does the solution remove blood from my circulation?

No. Blood can continue through other functioning veins while the treated vessel closes.

Will every visible vein disappear after one visit?

Not necessarily. Response varies by vein size, pattern, and circulation, so further assessment may be needed.
