Sclerosant Solution: Uses and Patient Information

A sclerosant solution is an injectable medicine used to irritate the lining of selected veins during sclerotherapy.

The intended local reaction causes the vein walls to adhere, so blood is redirected through other veins. Polidocanol and sodium tetradecyl sulfate are examples of medicines that may be used. The exact medicine and technique are chosen by the treating clinician.

A sclerosant is placed into a vein rather than into the surrounding skin. Its action is local to the treated vessel, which is why accurate assessment and injection technique matter. The clinician may use visual examination and other assessment methods to decide whether an injection treatment is suitable and to plan which vessels to address.

Sclerosant solutions are used in Sclerotherapy for selected visible veins, commonly on the legs. Not every visible vein is appropriate for cosmetic injection treatment. Prominent veins, leg discomfort, swelling, skin changes, or a history of clotting problems may call for a more detailed vascular assessment before a procedure is considered.

The treatment area is cleaned, and the clinician injects planned vessels using a fine needle. The number and location of injections are tailored to the vessels being treated.

Management can range from observation and lifestyle measures to compression, procedures that use heat or other energy, or surgery for particular vein problems. The choice depends on the type, size, location, and underlying cause of the vein issue. A clinician should explain whether the goal is cosmetic improvement, symptom management, or treatment of a venous condition.

Before treatment, share any history of blood clots, allergy, pregnancy, breastfeeding, heart or circulation problems, and all medicines and supplements. After injections, the clinician may recommend walking, compression, and avoiding specific activities for a period. Follow those instructions rather than relying on a generic aftercare routine.

Treated veins can look darker, feel firm, or become tender as they settle. Bruising, itching, and small areas of discoloration can also occur. Contact the treating clinic urgently for severe or increasing leg pain, substantial swelling, chest pain, shortness of breath, a spreading rash, or visual or neurological symptoms. New visible veins can develop over time because treatment of one vessel does not change every factor affecting the circulation.
