Why is a digital mammography system used in a mammogram?

During a mammogram, each breast is positioned and briefly compressed between plates while X-ray images are taken. The digital system records those images on a detector rather than film. The team can adjust image brightness and contrast on a screen, helping them inspect different areas of breast tissue and check whether an image needs repeating.

Digital images can be stored securely and compared with earlier mammograms when available. A radiologist interprets the images for findings such as masses, distortions, or areas of calcification. The system supports assessment, but an image alone does not determine the cause of a finding.

Tell the imaging team if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have breast implants, or have noticed a new breast change. Avoid deodorant, powder, or lotion on the chest and underarms on the day if the centre advises this, because some products can appear on images. Wear clothing that is easy to remove from the waist up. Compression may feel uncomfortable, but it lasts briefly and helps reduce movement and improve the image.

Bring details of previous breast imaging if it was performed elsewhere, so the radiologist can request or compare records.

A mammogram is not a substitute for assessment of a new breast lump, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or a persistent change in breast shape. Arrange medical advice for these findings even if a previous mammogram was normal. Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening redness, swelling, or severe pain.

Ask whether your images will be compared with earlier studies, when the report will be available, and what examination or imaging is recommended if an area needs clarification.
