Why is a bioabsorbable screw used in ACL reconstruction?

During ACL reconstruction, a tendon graft is positioned to take the place of the injured ligament. A screw can press the graft against the wall of a prepared bone tunnel, helping maintain its position during early healing.

Bioabsorbable materials are designed to gradually break down in the body rather than remain as a lasting metal implant. Their use may be considered alongside graft choice, tunnel position, bone quality, surgeon preference and the needs of any future treatment. They are not suitable for every person or every reconstruction.

Ask which fixation method is planned and why it fits your graft and bone tunnels. After surgery, use the brace or crutches as directed, protect the wounds and complete the staged physiotherapy plan. Avoid pivoting, jumping or advancing activity before your team confirms that the knee is ready.

Tell the surgical team about increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or new calf swelling. Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, or a foot that becomes cold, pale or numb.

Ask what the screw will fix, how graft healing will be checked, whether another fixation device is needed, and which activities are restricted. Clarify the plan for physiotherapy, return to work and a gradual return to sport.
