Why is an arthroscope used in meniscus repair?

The meniscus is a curved cushion between the thighbone and shinbone. A camera on the arthroscope sends a magnified view to a monitor, allowing the surgeon to assess the tear, its position and nearby cartilage and ligaments.

Small instruments enter through separate openings. The surgeon may clean the edges, place repair devices or check the stability of the repaired tissue. The final approach depends on the tear pattern, tissue quality, knee findings and overall treatment plan.

Discuss medicines, allergies, fasting and mobility arrangements before the procedure. After repair, protect the knee exactly as directed; some people need crutches, a brace or limits on bending while the tissue heals. Attend physiotherapy and increase movement and loading in the stages set by your care team.

Call the surgical team if pain or swelling is getting worse instead of settling, the wound becomes red or starts draining, or you develop fever. Get urgent care for chest pain, severe breathing trouble, marked calf swelling, or a foot that becomes cold, pale or numb.

Ask whether the tear is suitable for repair, what the arthroscope showed, and which movements or weight-bearing limits apply. Clarify when you can bend the knee, drive, return to work and resume sport.
