Why Does Vertebral Compression Fracture Cause Upper Back Pain?

The vertebrae in the upper and middle spine help support the rib cage and maintain posture. When one vertebra compresses, its changed shape can stress the tissues around the spinal segment. Pain may be felt in the centre of the back or between the shoulder blades, and it can worsen with standing, walking, bending, coughing, or turning. Protective muscle tightening may make the back feel stiff and cause fatigue during upright activity. Upper Back Pain is a common presentation of Vertebral Compression Fracture, but upper back pain can arise from several conditions and is not a diagnosis on its own.

Arrange an assessment for new upper back pain that is severe, persistent, or linked with a fall or sudden strain. Avoid heavy lifting and repeated forward bending until you have guidance. Change position gently and use a comfortable, supported posture. A clinician may recommend imaging to check the vertebra and may tailor pain relief, activity modification, a brace, or physiotherapy to your findings. Do not begin forceful back exercises while a fracture is being considered.

Get urgent help if upper back pain occurs with leg weakness, spreading numbness, trouble walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Seek prompt assessment after trauma if pain is intense or movement is markedly limited. New breathlessness, chest pain, fever, or unexplained worsening pain also needs timely medical attention because problems outside the spine can produce upper back symptoms.

Ask which part of the spine may be affected, whether imaging can confirm the cause, and how to move safely at home. Discuss suitable sleeping and sitting positions, whether a brace or physiotherapy is indicated, and whether bone-strength assessment should be considered.
