Why Does Vaginal Thrush Cause Vaginal Itching?

Vaginal Itching is a very common presentation of Vaginal Thrush because an overgrowth of yeast can trigger inflammation and irritate sensitive skin and nerve endings. The immune response to the yeast may cause redness, swelling, burning or soreness around the vulva, as well as itching inside the vagina. Scratching can damage already-irritated skin and make the sensation stronger.

Most people with Vaginal Thrush notice vaginal itching, but itching by itself does not identify its cause. Irritation from scented products, skin conditions, bacterial vaginosis and some sexually transmitted infections can feel similar. Thrush may also cause thick, white discharge and soreness during urination or sex; discharge is not always present. A strong or unusual smell, green or yellow discharge, blisters or pelvic pain point towards another problem and need medical assessment.

Keep the area gently clean and dry, and wash with lukewarm water or a mild, fragrance-free cleanser on the outside only. Avoid douching, scented wipes, perfumed washes and tight clothing while the skin settles. Do not scratch; a cool compress over clothing may ease the urge. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose an antifungal treatment when thrush is a reasonable diagnosis. Use treatment exactly as directed, and avoid repeatedly treating yourself when symptoms do not improve or return soon.

Arrange medical advice if this is your first episode, symptoms are severe, treatment does not help, or symptoms keep coming back. Seek prompt care for fever, lower abdominal or pelvic pain, sores, blisters, unusual bleeding or a strong-smelling discharge. Pregnancy, diabetes or a weakened immune system are also reasons to check the diagnosis and treatment with a clinician rather than relying on repeated over-the-counter treatment.
