Why does hives cause skin swelling?

Skin Swelling is a common presentation of Hives. The immune system releases histamine and other chemical signals in the skin. Fluid then collects between skin cells, producing raised welts that may look pale in the centre and pink or red around the edge. Individual welts can change shape, appear in different places, and fade while new ones form. Itching, warmth, or a stinging feeling may accompany the swelling. Deeper swelling, called angioedema, can affect the eyelids, lips, hands, or feet and may occur with or without visible welts.

Triggers vary. They can include infections, medicines, foods, insect stings, pressure, heat, cold, or exercise. Sometimes no clear trigger is found. Hives are not contagious, and scratching can further irritate the skin without addressing the histamine response.

Note when the welts started, where they appeared, and any recent medicines, foods, illness, or physical exposures. A cool compress and loose clothing may reduce irritation. Avoid a suspected trigger until a clinician has assessed it, but do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Recurrent episodes, swelling that lasts, or symptoms that interfere with sleep deserve a medical review.

Get emergency help immediately if swelling involves the tongue or throat, breathing becomes difficult, your voice changes, you feel faint, or hives occur with repeated vomiting. These can signal a severe allergic reaction. Seek prompt medical advice for extensive swelling, fever, painful rather than itchy lesions, bruising, or welts that remain in the same place for longer than a day. A clinician can distinguish ordinary hives from other causes of swelling.
