Why does type 2 diabetes cause frequent urination?

The kidneys normally filter glucose and return it to the bloodstream. When blood glucose is high, that reabsorption system can be overwhelmed. Glucose remains in the urine and draws extra water into it, producing more urine. This is why frequent urination and thirst often occur together.

Frequent Urination is a very common presentation of Type 2 Diabetes. It can also be linked with urinary infection, bladder conditions, pregnancy, prostate enlargement, diuretic medicines, and drinking large amounts of fluid, so the cause needs proper assessment.

Continue drinking water when thirsty; cutting back sharply can worsen dehydration. If you have diagnosed diabetes, use your agreed monitoring and treatment plan. Keep a brief record of when you urinate, nighttime waking, thirst, and any glucose readings to discuss at an appointment. New or ongoing urinary frequency warrants medical advice.
