Why does trichomoniasis cause vaginal itching?

Trichomoniasis is caused by a parasite that can affect the vagina, vulva, and cervix. Contact with irritated tissue and the body's immune response can produce itching, redness, burning, or soreness. Discharge with an altered colour or odour may accompany the itch, and urination or sex can feel uncomfortable.

Itching is not specific to trichomoniasis. Thrush, bacterial imbalance, dermatitis from scented products, and other infections can cause similar sensations. Scratching may create tiny skin breaks and make irritation worse.

Book testing if itching is new, persistent, severe, or follows sexual contact. Wash gently with water or an unscented product, keep the area dry, and avoid douching, fragranced wipes, and tight clothing. Do not insert creams or use leftover antibiotics unless a clinician recommends them, because the wrong treatment can delay the right diagnosis.

Seek prompt care for pelvic pain, fever, sores, marked swelling, bleeding, painful urination, or symptoms during pregnancy. Arrange a review if itching continues after treatment or returns, since reinfection or another condition may need checking.
