Why does throat cancer cause a hoarse voice?

The vocal cords need to meet and vibrate freely to make a clear voice. A tumour in or near the voice box can alter their surface, limit their movement, or cause swelling around them. The voice may become rough, breathy, quieter, strained, or lower in pitch. Symptoms can develop gradually rather than all at once.

Hoarse Voice is a common presentation of Throat Cancer. Far more routine problems, including a viral illness, voice strain, reflux, allergies, or smoking-related irritation, can also make the voice hoarse. The duration and accompanying symptoms help determine what checks are needed.

Arrange a medical review for hoarseness that persists or returns, especially if there is trouble swallowing, pain on swallowing, a neck lump, coughing blood, or unexplained weight change. Resting the voice, drinking fluids, and avoiding smoke may lessen irritation, but these measures do not replace an assessment of a continuing voice change.

A clinician may examine your mouth and neck and refer you for a close look at the voice box. Tell them when the change began, whether it varies through the day, and whether speaking is tiring or painful.

Get urgent help for noisy or difficult breathing, rapidly increasing neck swelling, an inability to swallow saliva, or a sudden severe change in the voice with weakness, facial droop, or speech difficulty. These symptoms need prompt evaluation.
