Why does throat cancer cause difficulty swallowing?

Swallowing needs the mouth, throat muscles and voice box to coordinate closely. A growth in the throat may take up space in that passage or make surrounding tissues swollen, sore, or less flexible. Food can feel as if it sticks, swallowing can hurt, and some people change to softer foods because solid food is harder to manage.

Difficulty Swallowing is a very common presentation of Throat Cancer. It can also arise from reflux, infection, muscle or nerve problems, and benign narrowing, so the symptom needs assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Book a medical appointment if swallowing difficulty persists, returns, or is getting worse. Describe whether the problem is with solids, liquids, or both; whether there is pain, coughing during meals, a neck lump, weight change, or a change in voice. A clinician may examine the mouth and neck and arrange a specialist assessment of the throat.

Until you are assessed, choose food textures that feel easier to swallow, take small mouthfuls, sit upright for meals, and avoid rushing. Do not force food through if it feels stuck.

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot swallow saliva, have severe breathing difficulty, choke repeatedly, cough up blood, or develop sudden weakness of the face or limbs. Prompt assessment is also needed when swallowing problems are rapidly worsening or preventing enough fluid intake.

Ask what part of swallowing seems affected, whether you need an urgent ear, nose and throat referral, what foods and drinks are safest meanwhile, and which changes should lead you to seek emergency care.
