Why does tennis elbow cause elbow pain?

Short answer
Elbow Pain is a very common presentation of Tennis Elbow because repeated forearm loading irritates the tendon attachment at the outer elbow.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical location
- Outer elbow and sometimes the upper forearm
- Common trigger
- Gripping, lifting, or resisted wrist movement
Why the outer elbow hurts
Tennis elbow is linked to overload of the tendons that attach forearm muscles to the outer elbow. Repeated gripping, wrist extension, racquet sports, tools, keyboard work, or lifting can repeatedly stress this attachment. Pain may be felt directly over the bony outer elbow and can travel into the forearm. It often increases when you grip, turn a handle, lift with the palm down, or extend the wrist against resistance. Elbow pain has other causes, so location and movement findings are used to confirm the source.
Ways to reduce irritation
Temporarily reduce the gripping or lifting task that reproduces pain, then rebuild capacity gradually. Keep the elbow and wrist moving gently within a comfortable range. Adjust tool handles, racquet technique, or work posture if these are triggers. A clinician or physiotherapist can assess strength and recommend a progressive exercise plan; a brace may be useful for some people when selected and fitted appropriately.
When to seek care
Seek assessment if pain is persistent, limits work or sleep, or does not improve after modifying the provoking activity. Prompt review is needed after a fall, sudden snap, major swelling, deformity, or sudden loss of grip strength. Numbness or weakness extending into the hand also warrants medical evaluation.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which tendon or joint structure is involved, how much gripping is safe, whether your work technique needs changing, and how to progress strengthening. Mention neck symptoms, hand tingling, previous elbow injury, and any sudden change in strength.

Questions people ask
Can tennis elbow occur without playing tennis?
Yes. Repeated gripping or wrist and forearm loading at work, home, or during other activities can stress the same tendon attachment.
Should I massage painful elbow tissue?
Gentle treatment may help some people, but avoid anything that sharply increases pain and seek advice about a broader loading plan.
