Why does telogen effluvium cause thinning hair?

Telogen effluvium shifts a larger group of follicles into the resting and shedding phase. When those hairs release, fewer strands remain covering the same scalp area. The result may be a wider part, more scalp showing under bright light, a smaller ponytail or reduced fullness around the temples. The individual remaining hairs may be unchanged; the overall coverage looks thinner because there are fewer of them together.

This pattern often follows a body stressor such as illness, childbirth, dietary restriction, emotional strain or a medicine change. Thinning Hair is a common presentation of Telogen Effluvium, but gradual patterned loss, patchy loss and scalp inflammation have different causes and should not be assumed to be the same process.

Track the parting, ponytail fullness and shedding rather than judging a single day in the mirror. Use gentle hair care, avoid repeated traction and keep meals nutritionally balanced. Tell a clinician about recent illness, weight change, stress, pregnancy, medicines and supplements. An examination can identify whether the thinning is diffuse and whether testing or treatment for an underlying contributor is appropriate.

Book a medical review if thinning is concentrated in patches, progresses quickly, affects the eyebrows, or occurs with itching, burning, scale, tenderness or scarring. Seek prompt attention if it comes with fatigue, dizziness, temperature intolerance or other new symptoms. A clinician can check for causes that do not follow the usual diffuse pattern.

Ask whether the pattern is diffuse or patterned; which event might have preceded it; whether the scalp shows inflammation; whether medicines or nutrition need review; and how to document changes in density during follow-up.
