Why does a stye cause eye discharge?

A stye can cause eye discharge because an inflamed eyelid gland produces fluid and irritates the nearby eye surface. A stye is a tender bump at the eyelid edge or just inside the lid. It can form when an oil gland becomes blocked and inflamed. The irritated lid may water, make the eye feel gritty, and leave a small amount of mucus or crust on the lashes, especially after sleep.

Eye Discharge is a common presentation of Stye. The discharge may be clear and watery, or it may look sticky as it mixes with tears and oils from the eyelid. A small amount of drainage from the bump itself can occur if it opens. Discharge can also come from other eye problems, including irritation or infection, so its appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Apply a clean warm compress to the closed eyelid for several minutes at a time, then gently wipe away loosened crust with clean water and a fresh pad. Wash your hands before touching the area. Avoid squeezing or trying to pop the stye, because this can further irritate the lid. Pause contact lenses and eye makeup until the eye is comfortable and the discharge has settled; replace or clean items that may have touched the affected eye.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for worsening eyelid swelling, spreading redness around the eye, marked pain, light sensitivity, or discharge that is increasing rather than improving. Seek urgent care if vision changes, the eye cannot open normally, pain occurs with eye movement, or you feel unwell with fever. A clinician can check whether the problem is limited to the eyelid and advise whether specific treatment is needed.

Ask whether the bump appears to be a stye or another eyelid condition, whether your discharge suggests an additional eye infection, and when it is safe to restart contact lenses or eye makeup.
