Eye Discharge: Causes, Care and When to Seek Help

Eye discharge can have several causes, and its colour, texture and accompanying symptoms help guide the next step.

It may look clear and watery, stringy, white, yellow or green. Lashes can stick together after sleep, and the eye may feel gritty, itchy, burning or as though something is caught under the lid. Discharge from one eye can later appear in the other, while a tender bump on the eyelid points attention to the lid itself.

Arrange urgent assessment for eye pain, light sensitivity, a change in vision, marked swelling around the eye, an injury, or discharge while wearing contact lenses. A newborn with eye discharge also needs prompt medical assessment. These features need an examination because the cornea or deeper tissues may need attention.

Avoid rubbing the eye and do not share towels, eye makeup or contact-lens items while symptoms are active.

The possible causes are listed alphabetically here, not in order of likelihood. Allergic conjunctivitis can bring itchiness, tearing and a puffy appearance when an allergen irritates the eye. Conjunctivitis can cause redness and discharge when the thin surface lining of the eye becomes inflamed. A stye is a local eyelid problem that can form a sore, swollen bump near an eyelash and may produce a small amount of discharge.

A clinician will ask when the discharge began, whether it affects one or both eyes, and whether there is itch, pain, fever, blurred vision, injury or contact-lens use. They may inspect the lids, lashes and surface of the eye, check vision, and look for swelling or a foreign body. Bring the names of any eye drops or contact-lens products you have used.

Treatment is chosen after the eye has been assessed. Cool compresses and avoiding a trigger may help allergy-related irritation. Conjunctivitis care can include cleaning discharge gently with clean water and following advice on drops or other treatment. A warm compress can encourage a stye to drain naturally; do not squeeze it. Antibiotic treatment is not appropriate for every type of discharge, so use prescribed drops exactly as directed.

Wash hands before and after touching the eye area. Use a fresh clean pad for each eye when clearing discharge, and wash pillowcases and face cloths. Replace eye makeup that became contaminated and follow contact-lens cleaning and replacement instructions. If an environment repeatedly triggers itch or tearing, reducing exposure can be useful.

Tell the clinician about redness, itch, lid swelling, crusting, tearing, pain, a foreign-body feeling, headache, fever and any visual change. The timing of these symptoms and a recent cold, allergy exposure, eye injury or new lens product can help narrow the cause.

Persistent or recurring discharge can affect comfort, sleep and contact-lens wear. An assessment can distinguish surface irritation from an eyelid problem or an infection that needs targeted care. Seek reassessment if symptoms worsen, vision changes, or the treatment plan is not helping.
