Why does snapping hip syndrome cause hip clicking and snapping?

A tendon normally glides as the hip bends and straightens. With snapping hip syndrome, a tendon or muscle may become tight or follow a slightly different path, then flick over a nearby bone. The sound or sensation can be felt at the front, side, or back of the hip depending on the structure involved. Some people notice only a painless snap, while others have soreness after repeated movement or exercise.

Reduce activities that repeatedly provoke the snap, such as deep hip flexion, running, or frequent leg swinging, while symptoms settle. Gentle stretching and strengthening may help when selected for your movement pattern. A physiotherapist can check hip control and flexibility and build a gradual return to activity. Do not force a stretch into sharp pain.

Arrange an assessment if the snapping is painful, causes weakness, limits walking, or continues despite changing the provoking activity. Seek prompt care after an injury or if the hip locks, gives way, becomes visibly swollen, or you cannot bear weight.

Ask which structure may be snapping, whether an examination or imaging is needed, which exercises fit your symptoms, and when you can safely resume sport.
