What hip clicking feels like
A click may be felt at the front, side or deep inside the hip when you stand, walk, lift the knee or rotate the leg. Some clicks are painless and occasional; others feel like a snap, catch or momentary block. Note whether the sound is accompanied by groin pain, reduced movement, weakness or a sense that the hip is giving way.
Hip clicking can come from a moving tendon, joint shape or labral irritation, and pain or catching helps guide the clinical assessment.
Is hip clicking urgent?
Seek prompt assessment if clicking began after a fall or twist and you cannot bear weight, or if the hip appears deformed, becomes suddenly very painful, or loses movement. Urgent care is also appropriate for a hot, swollen joint with fever. A painless click can be monitored briefly, but arrange review when it persists, causes pain, limits activity or repeatedly catches.
Conditions that can present with hip clicking
Hip clicking is a presentation shared by several conditions, and hearing or feeling a click does not identify the cause by itself. The possible causes below are listed alphabetically, not by likelihood.
How hip clicking is assessed
The clinician asks when the click occurs, whether an injury preceded it, and which activities reproduce it. Examination may include walking, hip range of motion, strength, pelvic control and specific movement tests. Imaging is chosen according to the findings: an X-ray can show bone shape, while ultrasound or MRI can help examine moving tendons or labral and other soft-tissue concerns.
Treatment depends on the cause
For a painless click, reassurance and observation may be enough. Painful snapping may improve with temporary load changes and physiotherapy focused on hip, trunk and pelvic strength, movement control and flexibility. Hip Impingement or a Hip Labral Tear may need a more specific rehabilitation plan and further review if catching continues. Treatment for Snapping Hip Syndrome is tailored to the tendon and movement that reproduce the snap.
Reducing irritation around the hip
Vary repetitive movements, increase training load gradually and strengthen the hips and trunk before returning to intense running, kicking or deep squatting. Avoid repeatedly forcing a painful end-range position. A warm-up that rehearses the movements of your activity can reveal a trigger early, allowing you to adjust technique or volume before symptoms escalate.
Symptoms to record with clicking
Write down the click's location and movement, plus pain, catching, stiffness, weakness, altered gait or reduced range. A click that is painless and stable has different implications from one paired with deep groin pain or a locking sensation.
What to do next
Arrange an examination when clicking interferes with sport, sleep, work or ordinary walking. A short video of the movement, if safe to record, and a list of provoking activities can help the clinician reproduce the symptom.

Questions people ask
Is a painless hip click always a problem?
No. An occasional painless click may not require treatment, but review is sensible if it becomes painful, persistent or associated with catching or weakness.
What does painful hip clicking suggest?
Painful clicking can present with conditions such as hip impingement, a labral tear or snapping hip syndrome; an examination is needed to separate them.
