Why does sinusitis cause runny nose?

Mucus helps trap particles and keeps nasal tissue moist. Inflammation changes how the lining works, often increasing secretions and narrowing the passages that normally drain them. This can create alternating blockage and discharge, sometimes with facial pressure, reduced smell or postnasal drip. Runny Nose is a common presentation of Sinusitis, but a runny nose can also occur with viral infections, allergies, irritants and other causes. The overall symptom pattern is more useful than discharge colour alone.

Use soft tissues and wash hands after blowing your nose to reduce irritation and the spread of respiratory germs. Saline spray or a correctly prepared nasal rinse may loosen mucus and ease blockage. Staying hydrated can make secretions easier to clear. Avoid smoke, perfume and dust when possible. A pharmacist can discuss suitable symptom relief, particularly if you have high blood pressure, glaucoma, are pregnant or take regular medicines.

Arrange medical care if symptoms are persistent, recurrent, getting worse after initial improvement, or affecting sleep and daily activities. Seek urgent help for swelling or redness around the eye, severe headache, neck stiffness, confusion, a new facial weakness or a change in vision. Get prompt advice if nasal discharge follows a significant head injury.

Ask whether your symptoms are more consistent with sinusitis, allergy or another nasal condition. Describe when the discharge began, whether it is one-sided, and any fever, facial pain, itching or sneezing. Ask which nasal products are safe for you and how long to use them before reassessment.
